You made reference to 18% gray being the average metering result of white highlights and black shadows in an image.  Is this an industry standard algorithm that is used for in-camera processing software?  Where does it come from?  I take it there is relationship with this and the 18% gray cards used for white balance adjustment?  If there is an article on the web you can point to that explains this, that would be great.  ]]></description>
