Here are a few birth photography tips:
- Timing is everything when it comes to birth photography. Be sure to arrive early and be prepared to stay late, as the birthing process can be quick or last hours.
- Understand the clients’ comfort level and desired images. Clients may want to avoid capturing certain body parts, specific angles, and more.
- Be a photojournalist. Birth photography requires that you stay out of the way and somewhat unnoticed. This means that you shouldn’t bring out your flashes, try to pose, or get too close.
- Understand the hospital’s procedures and rules. Some hospitals will allow it, others won’t, and others will have strict rules that you must follow.
- Understand the difference between birth photography and newborn photography. The two are very different in that birth photography happens at the time of the child’s birth, while newborn photography happens 1-2 weeks after birth in a controlled studio environment.
