Zeiss 85mm Otus ‘Confirmed’, Announcemnt at Photokina

By Anthony Thurston on September 4th 2014

Photo rumors is reporting this morning that they have confirmed that in addition to the two Loxia lenses announced earlier in the week, Zeiss will announce at least two more lenses at Photokina. One of those lenses, they say, is confirmed to be the rumored 85mm F/1.4 Otus.

In addition to the 85mm F/1.4 Otus, Photorumors says they believe that the other lens will be a 35mm F/1.4 ZM lens for Leica. These updates come from Zeiss’s official Photokina teaser image, which has been updated this week to show the silhouette of the new Loxia lenses and parts of two more lenses.

Photo rumors does not share how they confirmed that the 85mm Otus is one of the announcements, so take that with a grain of salt. But, the 85mm Otus has been one of the hottest rumors coming out of the summer, so I would not be surprised if this was the case and the lens is, in fact, the Otus.

Photokina starts in 12 days, so expect the gear announcements to intensify here over the next 1.5 weeks. It will be interesting to see all of the new gear…

Too bad for Zeiss that Sigma’s versions offer 99% of the image quality at 1/4 the price. And with autofocus. These lenses are for rich collector and elitists who “only shoot zeiss” simply so that they can brag about that fact. There are literally zero real-world applications in which the actual differences could be visible between, say, the 50 Art and the 50 Otus. But hey, this is not just a job, it’s a “craft”, and that is why people get to spend as much as they want, for whatever “look” they want. Hooray for capitalism!

for real, I think I would go with sigma or my own camera brand lenses all day every day over 4,000 dollars for a single lens, but there are those who can and would buy these beasts.

To be swiftly followed by a Sigma 85mm f1.4 ART at 1/8 the price perhaps?
