Working with the Veil

Nearly 70% of brides decide to wear veils on their wedding day. As such, we recommend learning to use the veil to your advantage when the opportunity presents itself. Though the veil belongs to the bride, consider it a supplemental tool in your kit and use the veil to compose shots that would not be possible (or that you likely could not get) without it.

Here are a few veiled portrait rules to consider:

  • Avoid the “Caught in a Net” look
  • Pleasing lines in the veil (i.e. when shooting outside the veil)
  • Pleasing shape to the veil (i.e. when dropped)
  • Strong leading lines with the veil
  • Great for concealing (background, arms, skin, etc.)
  • Composite if needed
