Setup and Link Building Round 1
Welcome to the 12 Week SEO Program. To make an impact in 12 weeks, we will need to focus more on action and less on theory. So if you need more information on any given topic, please be sure to ask questions in the comments. But for now, let’s jump right in.
The first thing we need to do is ensure that we are signed up for a few critical tools that we’ll need going forward. Follow these steps:
1. Signup for Google Analytics – Signup for a Google Analytics Account.
See these directions to connect the Google Analytics Account to your Website.
2. Signup for Google Webmaster Tools and Submit Your Sitemap – Signup for a Google Webmaster Tools Account and follow the instructions to connect it to your website.
Next, submit your sitemap following these directions:
Optional: Since you have your sitemap handy, sign up for your Bing Webmaster Tools Account as well.
3. Signup for the Keyword Planner – To access the keyword planner, which we’ll need to determine our best keywords next week, you’ll need an Adwords account. An adwords account requires that you input a credit card and start a campaign, but immediately turn off the campaign so that you won’t be charged anything.
Sign up here and enter in whatever info they require to get set up. Again, make sure you turn off your campaigns immediately to avoid charges.
Week 1 | Link Building and Directory Submission
Every week, you’ll receive a link building assignment. Link building is the process of driving quality links from external websites to yours. All else equal, the more quality links you drive to your site, the better your site will rank in Google.
Because we need a steady stream of links coming in at a natural rate, let’s get started immediately with a few this week.
Sign up for profiles on the following pages and spend 5-10 minutes on each one making them complete profiles with robust images, your website link and short bio.

- 500px (free account okay)
- Google My Business
- Bing Places
- Facebook Business
Note: When signing up for any of these directories/websites, make sure you use consistent NAPs (Names, Addresses, and Phone Numbers) in each of your listings when applicable. For example, do not list in one directory as “XYZ photography” and in another as “XYZ wedding photography.” Slight variations could affect your Local (maps) rankings. If your business doesn’t have a physical address, some listings will allow you to use “service areas.” However, not having a physical address will prohibit you from signing up for some directories and websites in future assignments. When this is the case, you may have to skip listing in that particular directory.
Also, be sure to keep all of your best images and your bio information handy throughout these 12 weeks. We’ll be creating a lot of profiles, so you want to save as much time as possible by having them convenient.
