Term: XMP File
Description: XMP, or Extensible Metadata Platform, is a file format introduced by Adobe in 2003. It is used to store metadata that can be read by multiple programs. Metadata is information about a file, such as the date it was created, the author’s name, and keywords that describe the content. XMP files are often used to store this type of information for images, documents, and videos. When XMP files are generated, they are typically embedded within the original file. This enables programs that don’t recognize the XMP format to still read the metadata. In addition, XMP files can be stored separately from the original file. For example, many digital cameras save image metadata to an XMP file alongside the image file. This allows the camera’s software to read the metadata without having to open the image file. Ultimately, XMP files provide a convenient way to store and share metadata.
