Using Instagram to Grow your business

With over 300 million active users and growing, Instagram is a wonderful tool for connecting photographers with fans and clients.

It’s a very visual platform, so it lends well to showcasing great images. Beyond the general social media tips already mentioned, here are a few Instagram specific tips and reminders:

Hashtags! – While hashtags are important in all of social media, they are particularly important with Instagram because users actively search hashtags on Instagram. So if you’re Instagramming a picture of a bouquet, tag it with #bouquet and that may lead to a bride discovering your work while looking for wedding inspiration. People use this search method for all sorts of topics. When you can find a way to tag a relevant, active topic, your followers will increase.

Shorten Your Links – Links are not actually clickable on Instagram, so the only way you can get traffic to your website is if you have a short, memorable URL. Revisit the 301 Redirects section for ways to get shorter links.

Embed Your Posts – Embedding your Instagram posts onto your website gives you the ability to connect your regular blog visitors to your Instagram account. If they’re interested, they will click through and potentially follow your account. Here is more information at https://www.slrlounge.com/embed-instagram. You might also consider plugins that display all your recent Instagram Posts.

Get Featured – This is easier said than done, but if you can get featured by someone with a lot of followers, your numbers will increase. This may take networking efforts outside of the social media and may require you to become actual friends with some of these bloggers. Or, it may simply be coming up on their radar with careful mentioning and hashtagging. Maybe you send them an email with some of your most recent work. If you have any networking magic up your sleeve, this is the time to use it because the potential exposure is significant.

Consider a Scheduler – Instagram does not have a scheduling feature at the moment. To schedule your posts, you will need to use an external service like Schedugram, Grum or Iconosquare. Though there are fees, they make consistency a little bit easier to achieve.
