Using Google + To Grow your Business

Because of its integration with Gmail, YouTube, and other Google products; Google Plus has become one of the largest social media networks with over a billion users and climbing.

The issue with Google Plus is that most of these users are inactive, and those who are active have limited reach. So, while we suggest carefully crafting your profile, creating a robust business page, and connecting all of your Google product accounts, we don’t suggest investing as much time into the daily management of this network when compared to the others.

Google Plus Limitations

Are your potential clients on Google Plus? Maybe, but they aren’t likely spending much time there on a regular basis, opting instead for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Also, what makes populating regular content difficult on Google Plus is the fact that their API doesn’t integrate with the other social networks. The result is that you aren’t able to automatically post to other social networks from Google Plus (or vice versa). This lack of integration significantly increases the time needed to consistently and effectively manage Google Plus.

Why You Still Need Google Plus

Despite the low levels of interaction, having a Google Plus account is still critical, primarily because of its connection to all of your other Google products. Furthermore, it gives you an additional profile that comes up in search results and leads to potential clients discovering your work.

Google Plus Integration with Gmail

For a while, Google was automatically creating a Google Plus account for all Gmail sign ups. They recently stopped doing this, but regardless, that means that if you have a Gmail account, you likely have a Google Plus account as well.

Google Plus Integration with Local Business Listings

Google Plus is essential for Local SEO. We will cover this in the Local SEO chapter of this book but for now just know that a Google Plus Business listing will significantly help you rank well in Google maps searches. Furthermore, the Google Plus listing can affect your organic searches. We’ll dive into this in the next chapter.

SEO Benefit for Your Content

A link shared on Google Plus potentially ranks better in search results. Here’s how it works:

  • If someone is logged-in to their Google account…
  • And if that person is following you on Google Plus…
  • And if that person types in a search term…
  • And if your shared post relates to the search term…
  • Then you post appears higher for that particular search

How to Gain More Google Plus Followers

The guidelines for building up your Google Plus account is similar to the general guidelines for all social media. As a reminder, here they are again:

  • Create and share great content
  • Add existing friends and fans
  • Make actual connections through follows, comments, shares, and +1’s
  • Participate in related photography and industry groups
  • Use appropriate hashtags
  • Take the time to interact with your fans
  • Share your posts outside of Google Plus (in your email and on other social media)

Google Hangouts – In addition, consider hosting Google hangouts. This only applies if it makes sense within the context of your business. For example, if you are an educator in the photography industry, you could host a hangout to teach a particular topic. If you’re a community leader within a particular industry, i.e. the real estate community, fashion community, or wedding community; it would make sense to hold meetings via Google Hangouts for these communities as well. Since Google hangouts are done directly from your Google Plus account, hosting them will lead to more connections and more followers.
