Using Depth and Layers

There’s a lot to be said about using foreground elements to create depth through layers. With the right composition, layers can add a powerful dynamic to still images. If there are no objects to use in the foreground, consider using other subjects.

In the example above, the bridal party has been posed to create depth and frame the couple (who have been illuminated via off-camera flash held by an assistant who is hiding just behind one of the subjects in the foreground). The play of light and dark also draws more focus to the intended subjects, which in this case is the bride and groom (even though the couple dipping in the left corner of the image are also engaged to be married and creating their own side story within the frame).
