Upsample For Large Format Prints

Not every printer will require you to upsample an image before printing it at a larger scale (Bay Photo being one of those who do not require it), but it helps to know this information in the event that you do need to upsample an image for print. The more control you maintain throughout the process, the more likely you will end up with a printed image that matches your vision.

Here are the steps to upsample and sharpen an image:

  1. Finalize retouch
  2. Image > Image Size (Ctrl/Cmd + Alt/Opt + I)
    1. Enter appropriate size, 300 PPI
    2. Resample: Bicubic smoother (if noise is present)
    3. Resample: Preserve details (if noise is minimal)
  3. Zoom to Scale
  4. High pass sharpening
    1. Jump layer (Ctrl/Cmd + J)
    2. Filter > Other > High pass
      1. Pixel radius: 2 to 6 (depending on image size/resolution)
    3. Blend mode: Hard light
    4. Mask/Reduce opacity as desired
