Our Three Favorite Lenses for Bridal Portraits/Prep
Here are the three lenses we prefer for shooting bridal portraits and prep photos.
- 85mm Prime (True Portrait)
- 50mm Prime (Portrait/Journalism)
- 35mm Prime (journalism/Environmental + Exaggerated Portrait)
Often times, the hotel rooms we work with are constricting in both space and creativity. Be equipped with gear that allows you to be versatile and dynamic in how you attack a scene. Often times these rooms are small, dark, and there can be a lot of clutter going on from the party the night before. Look for clean backgrounds while shooting and make sure the light is nice and even.

Would a 56mm f1.2 on APS-C be considered as true portrait?
I think we need to ask questions on the FB group, but I believe if you’re using the Fuji system it has a crop factor of ~1.5-1.6 making your 56mm an effective 89/90 mm so yes I think you’re definitely in the true portrait range.
So with the switch back to the Canon system I’m torn since I do not own any Sigma Art glass although it’s always been on the wish list, especially with the 85 Art coming out next month. I generally don’t use primes although I own the 50 1.2 and 85 1.8 for Canon (barely used). I wasn’t aware of all the non-sharp, rejected shots from the Sigma lenses and how it affected workflow. I already have my own problems with focus in low light and reject many photos as it is with Canon. What would be the deciding factors in purchasing new lenses to complete “the kit” (not now, not in budget) – pricing, image quality, software/hardware compatibility (i.e. Sigma and 5DM4 or Mac OS Sierra), workflow lengthening? Is there a major difference in number of shots taken with the equivalent prime focal lengths from Canon and Sigma Arts during an average wedding? Thanks for any opinions!
