Why You Should Not Hire Out for SEO

It’s natural to want to outsource things like web marketing and SEO because you’re so busy. However, you need to resist the urge to outsource, at least until you know enough to hire and oversee the right SEO team. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. SEO Requires Consistent Work – I’ve heard photographers say, “I’ll just hire a local SEO guy for a few hundred bucks and have him tell me what to do.” Unless this person is the one actually writing your blog posts, naming your images, thinking about your FAQs, interacting with your fans on social media, and essentially running your business, then this model is a temporary fix. After completing this book, the best SEO practices will be like second nature to you; and everything you do will work towards those efforts. It’s worth the investment to learn these things now.
  2. You Understand the Business Best – As you’ll learn in this book, a major aspect of SEO consists of understanding your own business, its goals, its connections, its industry, and its related industries. While some of these SEO companies will try their best to gain insight into your industry, there’s nobody in this world that will understand your business like you.
  3. Untrustworthy Companies – As a business owner, I’m sure you get hundreds of emails a year from overseas SEO companies promising “number 1 rankings” on Google. You should never hire one of these firms, no matter how affordable it is and how promising it sounds. If they engage in spammy or blacklisted practices, your SEO will suffer and you may even get entirely removed from search results. Though it is possible to clean these up, it takes a lot of time and effort to get back on Google’s good side. Follow this general rule of thumb. If it sounds too good to be true, then it absolutely is.
  4. Expensive Companies – Most quality SEO firms in the US are expensive. While many are reputable and produce results that are otherwise difficult to achieve, you’ll certainly be paying the price. Most reputable SEO firms are used to dealing with big fish like startups with investor money and companies looking to consistently spend. Even the biggest photography studios don’t fall into that category. Most of your quotes will start at $500 to $1,000 per month and increase from there. While you can find great companies for less than that, the search won’t be easy and you will experience some costly trial and error along the way.
  5. Many Existing Web Resources – Throughout this book, we’ll link you over to some of our favorite resources for your continuing education. These sites offer free books, active forums, and other awesome tools to help you diagnose and improve the SEO on your site. You just need to learn the basics so you can use them!
