Meta Descriptions

The meta description is the text that shows up under the title in search results. Google does NOT take the words inside of this tag into consideration when determining search results. However, this description plays a critical role in getting your users to actually click on your web page.

Like the Title Tags, the Meta Description is set within each page on your Website. The code looks like the following, with the words contained within the quotation marks after the “content=” being the meta description.

<meta name=”description” content=”Use this section to briefly describe what is
on the page”>

If it’s left blank, by default, search engines typically use the first few sentences of your page in place of the meta description.

If you’re using WordPress, you can easily customize this with a WordPress plugin like the “All in One SEO” Plugin you see below.

In Squarespace, the Meta description field looks like the following:

Other Meta Tags

In the interest of saving time and sanity, we are going to skip over a few of the Meta tags that are not very relevant for photography studios. The following Meta tags are unimportant: noarchive, nosnippet, noodp/noydir. If you would like to learn about them for your own knowledge, perform a google search for each term. However, we are going to continue forward.
