Light Control Is The Name Of The Game
In the side-by-side image above, you can see how adjusting the zoom on a flash can affect the light output in a room. A tighter zoom (100mm vs. 24mm) will limit the light spill when the flash fires, whereas a wider zoom will spread the amount of light that the flash emits. During a reception, it’s often advisable to control the flash spill in order to avoid overpowering the ambient light, which is often intentionally designed for the occasion. Instead, your goal is to light your subject (bride, groom, toast maker, etc.). If zooming the flash does not limit enough of the light spill, try using a flash grid, which will further narrow the light direction.
