The walking shot is a staple of any engagement shoot because of it’s timeless, natural, and interactive look. In the article below, we have 5 tips for you to get amazing walking shots on your next engagement session!
5 TIPS FOR AMAZING WALKING SHOTS
TIP 1: THE REFLECTOR CHASE
The Reflector Chase is a technique we use when we want to fill in light while our couple is walking. We have our assistant walk alongside the couple, keeping the same speed and distance so the light remains constant. The assistant will have to walk backwards in order to aim the reflector properly, so we advise everyone to walk slowly!
TIP 2: SHOOT EXTRA
With the walking shot, you’re going to get a lot of shots that are “in between” steps that won’t be very photogenic for the couple, and If you’re doing the reflector chase you’ll also get shots of missed lighting. This is why we always shoot extra, so we can make sure we capture the best shots. Also don’t be afraid to ask the couple to do the same walk again, because getting the perfect shot sometimes means taking a few extra takes.

TIP 3: INSTRUCT THE FEMALES TO WALK TOE OVER TOE
We instruct our female models to walk toe over toe because it compliments the figure. With every step they take their hip will kick out and it creates a nice natural curve to the body. We also avoid any awkward steps with the feet are apart, which creates an unflattering look, especially in between steps.
TIP 4: TELL THEM TO PAUSE
At one point in their walk we’ll tell them to pause and look at each other and maybe go in for a kiss. At this time we’ll get the light perfect and we’ll get this shot of them mid walk. This is also a perfect chance to get more traditional portraits of the couple looking at the camera while in the scene. It adds variety to the shots, and you’ll have a guaranteed safety shot of them in this scene.
TIP 5: HAVE FUN WITH IT!
Walking is a casual activity, and it’s easy for the couple to do, so take advantage of it! We can have the couple goof around with each other, tickle one another, or try to make the other get off balance. Turn it into a fun activity for them and photograph it! It’s an easy way to get fun and charming photos of your couple.
