How to get started in social media

So now that we’ve convinced you of the importance of social media, where do you start? Here are the first few steps to getting started. From there, each network will have specifics that we’ll cover in the next chapter. But for now, complete the following steps to get the ball rolling.

Start All Accounts at OnceIt might seem overwhelming to start all of the accounts in one sitting, but it’s much more efficient. Start with the following:

  1. Facebook
  2. Instagram
  3. Google Plus
  4. Twitter
  5. Pinterest

Launching them all at once will allow you to save time, because you’ll have all of the profile and cover photo images and all of your business information on your computer and fresh on your mind. Also, you’ll want to make sure you get your ideal business name on each network, so completing the process as soon as possible will help you lock down your names. Even if you have no desire to participate in some of these networks, it’s still a great idea start all accounts in order to claim your business name.

Fill Out Your Bio & Customize Your Profile – Add a profile picture, a cover photo and a full bio to all social networks.

As a photographer, your profile picture and cover photo are great opportunities to showcase your work, so use that to your advantage by uploading amazing pictures.

In your bio on each of these networks, be sure to mention that you’re a photographer in order to connect with others in the photo world and related industries. Because there are so many fake accounts out there, making yours personalized helps add legitimacy and increases the chances of someone connecting with you. The specifics of every social network are different, and we’ll go over each one in the next chapter.

Start with Your Friends – There is that saying that “nobody wants to drink at an empty bar.” This phrase applies to the world of social media, as people are much more inclined to “like” or follow a profile if it already seems popular. You have to start somewhere! Your family and friends have supported you in other aspects of your business and most will be glad to help you in the social networking world as well. But remember, there is a fine line between asking and spamming. You never want to be THAT ONE annoying friend who keeps trying to market services to your family and friends. Find the balance where you feel most comfortable.
