Filling and Refining Natural Light, Part 2
The purpose of refining natural light is to add light in a subtle manner so that the image looks as though it were shot in purely natural light. The key is to add just enough light so that the ratio between ambient light and flash are balanced.

It’s important to remember to match light direction to keep the image looking natural. The sun’s location may not be apparent, but there may be a significant surface nearby (such as a hotel wall) that is reflecting enough light to affect the light direction. In such cases, match the light direction based on the reflection.
