Defining Related Links

As we mentioned earlier, links from related websites (with relevant content) are more valuable than links from unrelated websites. But what does “related” mean? Websites can be related based on a number of factors. For photographers, here are a few examples:

Related Based on Photography Industry – Links from photography websites should be one of your primary objectives. This can be links from other photographers, photography magazines, photography forums, photography directories and more. We’ll get more into the “how” part further into this chapter.

Related Based on Location – Many website owners think of the term “related links” and simply focus on websites in their industry. But the creative ones realize that related also means related based on location. So even though that local restaurant or local gym is not in the photography industry, it’s still related to your location. Your location-based keywords will be beneficial to your rankings.

Related Based on Other Industries – Photography is a unique industry when it comes to SEO because most photographers are actually in multiple industries. For example, a wedding photographer is both a photographer and a wedding professional. A real estate photographer is both a photographer and a real estate professional. A newborn photographer is in the photography industry and the baby services industry. When it comes to targeting related websites, think beyond photography and consider these other related industries as well.

Anchor Text for External Links

As we mentioned in Book 1, anchor text is the clickable text of a link that is displayed to the visitor. So when you click on a link that says “click here,” the words “click here” are the anchor text. The code might be something like this:

<a href=”http://www.yourdomain.com”/>Click Here</a>

In the example above, the “http://www.yourdomain.com” is the destination URL and the “Click Here” is the anchor text, the only part of the code the reader actually sees.

When building links to your site, it’s important to utilize keywords in your anchor text often. Search engines use anchor text as an indication of what content the link contains.

Example – If the anchor text for a link pointing to your page is “New York Fashion Photographer,” that text is helping search engines understand that the destination page is about a “New York Fashion Photographer.” Therefore, the anchor text will help that page rank better for that keyword. Whenever you have control over the anchor text, use the keywords of the destination URL instead of phrases like “Click Here.”

To recap, avoid using the following code:

<a href=”http://yourdomain.com”>Click Here</div>

Instead, use something like this:

<a href=”http://yourdomain.com”> New York Fashion Photographer</a>

Like anything else in SEO, don’t overdo it. Using the exact same keywords as the anchor text too much can be flagged as unnatural and dilute the value of the link and may even contribute to a ranking decrease.

General Rule – Use keywords in the anchor text whenever you have control over it. The link building strategies that we’ll be covering will build a lot of links from a lot of different sources, many of which you won’t be able to control the anchor text. So, when you DO have full control over the anchor text, do your best to naturally use your keywords in the anchor text.
