Controlling the Background
Tap into the power of aperture and backlighting to control the brightness of the background in your headshots. Stopping down the aperture from f/2.8 to f/13, for example, will darken the background. You can then add light to the background with an additional strobe to create a soft, natural vignette around the subject. For added interest and variety, experiment with colored gels on the backlight, but consider the purpose of the image when choosing a color. A bright purple background, for instance, might not be the best choice for a corporate headshot.
