Chapter 5 Intro | Transcription

Welcome to Chapter Five. Now, from here on out this is all about shooting. We’re going to go through all the different shoots that we’ve been on, we’re going to analyze each shoot, how we lit it, and so forth. We’re starting this off right with direct flash done right.

That’s right. Direct flash can actually be a fantastic type of light. It simply has to be used correctly. Most of us, when we think of lighting, say a portrait with direct flash, we kind of cringe because it doesn’t come up with a good look. It’s a very hard light and it doesn’t look flattering but when you play into that light, when you use it for stylistic effect, you can create amazing looking images so long as it’s done right.

We’re going to start the chapter off with tips for direct flash. When to use it, when not to use it, if you’re in a pinch and you have to use direct flash to light a standard portrait. We’re going to give you ideas on how to do it so it looks as good as possible. Then we’re going to go onto stylistic uses of direct flash. We’re going to talk about direct flash done right and then we’re going to do it up with all sorts of awesome direct flash modifiers to create different looks with a studio shoot featuring Yoko.

From there, we’re going to go into direct flash plus shutter drag just to show you a little bit of more of the kind of effects that you can create by combining your ambient exposure and a shutter drag, along with the freezing capabilities of your flash.
