Ceremony: The Scene and Venue

As with capturing creative angles and shoot-throughs, it’s important to find time during the ceremony to take photos of the scene to highlight the venue. These shots are great for delivering to the coordinators and the venue, to really showcase the property and decor. Venue images can also be shot creatively, such as from a low angle with a tilt-shift lens. Don’t limit yourself to standard point-and-shoot-style images.

Here are the basic lenses, settings, and positions/shots to consider for capturing scene and venue shots:

  • LEAD/SECOND: 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 24/90mm TS-E

  • SHUTTER SPEEDS: Ideally (1/200+) low-light (1/50+)
  • EXPOSURE: Max histogram without clipping shadows (highlight alert always on!)

  • Back aisle, ultra-wide, wide
  • Side angle, ultra-wide, wide, tight
