Beach: Flashed, Pt. 2
Readjust your subjects’ positions to get a wider variety of shots within a single scene. You don’t need to change locations. Like always, pay attention to shadows and highlights, and maximize your camera’s dynamic range. Start by finding how and where you want the ambient light to fall on your subjects’ faces, and then introduce the flash. Use the natural direction of the ambient light to determine where to position your subjects as well as where to place your flash. However you decide to light the scene, be sure to keep the lighting consistent for storytelling purposes.
Note: Dramatic lighting should not limit your storytelling potential. As you can see in the video above, you can still capture a variety of angles and poses using dramatic lighting. It should not be reserved exclusively for epic shots, but rather be used when it is requested as your subjects’ preferred style.
