We’ve covered foundation posing for couple’s portraiture, now we’re going to cover foundation posing for newborns. In this article we’re going to cover the Back Pose, a simple, natural, and photogenic pose for newborns.
BASIC NEWBORN POSING POSITIONS
For newborns, there are three basic posing positions: back, side, and tummy. In this first pose I’m laying our newborn on her back and gently placing her hands on her tummy.
After my newborn is in place, I have my assistant bring in a silver reflector (Westcott 5-1 Reflector) to fill in light. Note that we don’t reflect light directly on our newborn, because that can be uncomfortable or even damaging to her sensitive eyes. Also if you notice, I’m wearing a camera strap with my camera, something I normally don’t do. I did this because safety comes first, the last thing I want to do is accidentally drop my camera on the fragile newborn.
THE FINAL SHOT
With my Canon 50mm f/1.2 Lens on my Canon 5D Mark III I’m ready to take the final photo. My camera settings are set to f/2.0, 1/100 sec, ISO 200.
