Whoops! Canon Germany Leaks Rumored 11-24mm F/4L | Leak

By Anthony Thurston on November 13th 2014

Well, it seems that those rumors about an upcoming ultra-wide 11-24mm F/4L from Canon were legit. In their excitement to post the new 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS II, Canon Germany also accidentally posted the new listing for an 11-24mm F/4L.

The listing was quickly removed, but -as we all know- once its on the interwebs, it doesn’t come off. Several people noticed the Canon leak, and were able to get screenshots and details about the lens from the page.

The EF11-24mm 1 : 4L USM is the longest ultra wide-angle zoom lens for full frame cameras by Canon. It is characterized by the completely new design, new lens coating and its unrivaled performance.

Now if Canon Rumors has the information correct, this new lens -whenever it is officially announced by Canon- will have a price tag of around $2899 US. It is no secret that Canon users have long wanted a lens similar to the Nikon 14-24mm F/2.8G. It will be interesting to see if this lens does it for them. I have a feeling that the max aperture of F/4 may turn at least a few of them away.

There is no new information on this lens, like specs or an expected release date. But you can get updated on the latest information about this rumor from our previous post. Stay tuned and we will update you again if anything new crops up…

Interesting opinion that an f/4.0 lens has no place in a kit bag these days. I think this piece of gear would make a killer landscape lens.

I would recommend you have a look at the lens options for medium format bodies such as Mamyia, Hasselblad, and other 645 mount cameras. The majority of the lens line up starts at f/4.0.

That is exactly why I shoot the Contax and Pentax systems in medium format. Im sure it will be a fine lens I just don’t need a lens for landscapes the starts at f/4, thats what my 16-35 f/2.8 is used for. My subjects are mostly portraits and people, If I did a ton of landscapes I might care about this lens.

This lens has no chance of making it in my bag because of the f4. I am so disappointed with the majority of their releases lately.

With all the negative talk around Canon’s sensors lately not many have been giving them credit for their lens lineup. I think Canon have been very well lately introducing some great lenses to an already large collection. I hope the 5dmk4 is the camera that is the cherry on top. Fingers crossed for an early 2015 announcement.

    F/4? Disappointment in 3, 2, 1…Bang!

And no IS (if the rumor is true).

So this looks like a landscape/architectural lens at first glance. Many other photography needs would prefer IS and/or f/2.8. For ~ $3k (in this focal length), you’d think it would have at least one of those things.

*Massive* discussion about this leak the last few days. Excitement if true, of course. Folks who are believing the rumor associate the huge price tag with ‘the next generation’ of L lenses for higher MP sensors. Also, some folks are still miffed that Canon went with the 16-35 focal length with their latest ultrawide zoom and not 14-24 like Nikon has. So this would be great news for those folks.

The lens would not be for me personally as I have invested in the Lee 100mm (4×6, 4×4, etc.) setup and do not want to pitch them for a new system with dinner plate size filters from Wonderpana or the Lee SW150 system (if it would even work with such a lens). I’m pleased as punch with my 16-35 F/4L IS and don’t foresee the need for an 11-24mm FL lens. (But I’m sure others will.)

The wildcard, of course, is *if* it’s true. Some have argued the pic is a mashup of a few existing lenses and that no one other than the source saw the actual German CPN page before it was pulled — we’ve only seen a very photoshoppable screenshot to this point — so it very well could be a hoax.
