Valentine’s Day Gift Guide for Male Photographers

By Tanya Goodall Smith on February 3rd 2016

I have a confession to make. I have no idea what men want. I figure if it’s expensive, electronic and/or high-speed, it’s a shoe-in, right? Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and if you exchange gifts with a photographer, you can’t go wrong with a new gadget or photography gear. Here are my best-educated guesses for what a male photographer might like on the big romantic day. Also, in case you missed it, check out our Valentine’s Day Gift Guide for Lady Photographers as well.

1. A New Camera Strap

I’ve been using the Peak Design Slide Strap for a year now, and it’s my favorite. The one pictured here has some nice leather details, which add a little more to the already masculine style. I love this strap because it’s durable, versatile, comfortable and easy to remove from the camera when I want to take it off. For more information about camera straps, including this one, check out my article Which Camera Strap is Right for You?

2. A New Camera Bag

If your guy has been using the same old ratty camera bag for years, maybe it’s time for an upgrade? I chose to feature this ONA Brixton Camera/Laptop Messenger Bag because it’s nice enough to wear with a suit to a day job or on a wedding photography shoot but rustic enough to tote around on-location in the woods. The real leather is durable, practical, and stylish. It will hold a large camera body, two or three lenses, a laptop, and tablet. The price is a little steep, but these bags are made to last for years. This one has very good reviews over at B&H.

3. A Mirrorless Camera

I told you, guys like expensive gifts (mine does, anyway). If your man doesn’t have a mirrorless camera yet, he probably wants one. I like the retro styling of the Fujifilm X-T10, but you might have to do a little digging to find out what brand and model he has his eye one. There are plenty of options in a variety of price points. Check them out by clicking here.

4. A Drone

Talk about expensive! Drones can cost thousands of dollars. I’m featuring a beginner model, one you might start out with to learn on before investing a significant amount of money. The BLADE 180 QX HD Quadcopter with EFC-721 720p HD Flight Camera is only $149. Some are significantly cheaper “toys” but consider this; you really do get what you pay for. This one has great reviews for durability and ease of use right out of the box. Oh, man, I might have to buy this for my husband, and he isn’t even a photographer.

5. Photography Education

SLR Lounge Lighting 201

You can’t go wrong with the gift of education. If he’s wanting to step up his game and learn how to create more dynamic, dramatic lighting or simply have more control over the lighting in his images, I suggest our Lighting 201 workshop. He’ll learn how to use a single off-camera light source  for creating a variety of looks and effects. Learning to use off-camera flash was life-changing for me. It really transformed my work because I was no longer limited by available light in any given situation.

6. A Cool T-shirt

You’ve seen Pye wearing this shirt all over our SLR Lounge videos, and I’ve always wondered where he got it, so I did a little digging. DodgeAndBurn.com sells funky cool t-shirts, books, and artwork for photographers. Now you (and your guy) can be like Pye.

7. A Really Big Flashlight

The Lowel GL-1 Power LED is a high-powered spotlight developed specifically for use by photographers. The light is dimmable and zoomable plus it comes with a recharble battery and option to change color tempature through additional filters that can be purchased seperately. It can also be mounted on a tripod. Dude, I want one of these things myself.

8. More Storage

I don’t know about your guy, but I tend to fill up hard drives fast. I also work on a laptop so portability is a must. I like these My Passport portable hard drives for storage and back up. Plus, these would wrap up so nicely for a gift, don’t you think?

Do you exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day? What would you get your guy? I’d love to hear in the comments (seriously, a quadcopter or a really big flashlight would be a big hit at my house!)

XOXO- Tanya

Tonya, I’m not greedy. You can put me down for #1, #2, and #5, then get me the rest for Father’s Day. : – )

I’m holding out for the ultimate photo accessory – an Aston Martin to get to my shoot in.

Would love one of those t-shirts, but wow $32 is a bit crazy. I get that they’re a low volume item though. Being up here in Canada means it would cost me $46.75 CDN, before shipping fees. :-(
