We all knew it was coming, at some point these free social networks must actually make a profit and sadly the best way for them to do that is through advertising. Instagram has built up a strong following over the last several years with its fun filters and easy sharing. Now all of that hangs in jeopardy as users flip out over the introduction of “sponsored posts,” aka advertising.
Instagram started rolling out test ads over the last week to get users acclimated to the addition of sponsored posts to their streams. Unsurprisingly the attempt to acclimate users did not work, and users are ticked off about ads in their streams, many have even resorted to leaving nasty comments on the ad image voicing their hate for ads.
From an advertiser perspective though the addition seems to have been a success. The Michael Kors sponsored ads which started running this week already have over 36,000 likes. So while the response has largely been negative from a user standpoint, the result is still a good one for advertisers.
This may turn into an interesting way to advertise your photography business since people will be looking for photos they like. People whined pretty badly when twitter added their advertising and what do you know, they are still around. The point is that yes the backlash may be bad right now, but once people are used to the ads it may turn into a good way to market your photography business.
