Boy meets girl. Boy likes girl. Boy flashes girl…
…with his camera. (I know where you wanted to go with that).
This is the premise of an adorable animated short film, ‘Taking Pictures‘ created by Simon Taylor, an animator and hobbyist photographer living in London. Simon was looking to make a simple and unique ‘boy meets girl’ film with “subtle” acting and “remembered a moment between my girlfriend and I where we were waiting in a queue, and both had our cameras, we started popping the flashes up at each other like a quickdraw. The rest of the story grew outwards from that moment.”

The project took a year and a half to complete. Working in his spare time, Simon’s biggest challenge was getting the lighting on the characters and the proper lighting to set the scene. Simon used directional light for the sun, but getting the light on the boy and girl just right took up much of his time. Each character had a three point light setup, not only for depth, but to avoid giving them an “alien face.”
Because the two main characters don’t have a very defined nose if I didn’t get the combination of subsurface scattering on their skin and the lighting quite right they ended up with grey faces and no nose!
This 2-minute video is sure to make you smile today and maybe encourage you to go out and shoot. You never know who you might encounter!
