Sony Action Cam, A Rubber Duckie, & Exotic Animals

By Kishore Sawh on December 15th 2013

The world is evolving, and tech and cameras are beating nature-made evolution by a mile and that translates into lots of options. That said however, since its inception, GoPro has cornered its market. Actually, to be more precise, they have created, herded, captured, and fenced in a market.  If you fancy yourself a sort Jacques Cousteau or Felix Baumgartner; a person who ventures to places where frost bitten fingers are like paper cuts , or getting ‘the bends’ is a right of passage, or perhaps you require an oxygen mask and G-suit, then in all likelihood you’re going to own a GoPro….or four. Or eight. As the single best selling camera in the world, there’s a good chance I’m right. Sony though is trying to take its own wedge of the pie with its slick Action Cam, and their evil geniuses are plotting to do it by going for everyone’s Achilles Heel…adorable exotic animals.

Thoughts & Whiskers

The Action Cam is great; it’s slimmer and prettier than a GoPro, it fits better on the side of the helmet and in the hand due to its elongated design, and results are brilliant. The thing is though, there’s not much wrong with the GoPros. And while most may admire the Sony, their bias is now too entrenched to like it. In fact, GoPros, while limited somewhat in a user interface, sort of make up for it because they can take a beating, and they just work. And they work, and they work and they work; like a mule with the juiciest carrot dangling at a lick’s reach and hot iron at its backside. Sony, knows this. As such, they need a new angle to grab our attention and it’s been done with a rather adventurous and mischievous rubber duck with a penchant for adventure. See him with some of nature’s most endearing and exotic animals below and tell us which cam you’d have and why!

This is so stupid. Sony marketing fail.

They can’t even come close to GoPro in terms of marketing and want-ability. Are we supposed to want this so we can strap it in a rubber ducky and take it to the zoo? Who is supposed to relate to this? Just dumb.

Whoa Blake, don’t hold back, and tell us how you REALLY feel! But really, I understand where you’re coming from, and this was partially tongue in cheek. I think Sony is searching to attract anyone they can in this market for a slice of what’s really GoPro’s pie. You can’t really go wrong with animals and from what I can tell, GoPro hasn’t done (likely out of lack of need) something like this showing a less extreme use. Having played with both mind you, I can see advantages to either over the other, not to mention the price points are different. Lets not forget also that Sony customers are often Sony customers, who’ll like to have this sort of option to pair with all the other Sony devices they already, no doubt, have. Happy Holidays Blake.
