Today, Nikon unveiled an extensive firmware update for both the D800 and D800e which both fixes some issues with the two cameras as well as adds some interesting new features.
Among the updates is this interesting little gem, D800 owners will now have the ability to assign the movie button to other functions. This is a pretty neat feature that will be of most interest to you stills-only people, because you will now essentially gain an extra button on the body.
You can find the full details and download links for the new firmware over at Nikon here (D800 – D800E). Below I have listed some of the big feature improvements and fixes.
- Custom Setting f13 has been changed to Assign Movie Record Button.
- HTTP server mode – Use to view the pictures on the camera memory card, or to take photographs, from the web browser on a computer or iPhone.
- FTP upload mode (previously Transfer mode (FTP)) – Use to upload photos and movies from camera memory cards, or to upload photos as they are taken, to an ftp server.
- Support for CompactFlash memory cards with capacities greater than 128 GB has been added.

Any chance of an article detailing giving a “how to” on the firmware upgrade? Never done it before.
Will be updating mine tonight :)
haha fake d800 used as the headline image.
Lets hope the fixed the long write bug. This will be their second attempt!
I also wish Nikon would fix their stupid menu bank system. Stupid is an understatement! While it is nice to have lots of options, they don’t easily allow you to reset your menu banks to YOUR settings. You have to export your settings to a memory card. Canon has the right idea in this area: User Sets. Anything can be programmed INCLUDING playback options. Even on the Nikon cameras that have user sets, they don’t allow you to set ANY or ALL settings.
NIKON Let me bracket by more than one stop at a time PLEASE!!
And no, taking 5 images 1 stop apart does not count!!
YES! Brackting 0, +-2, (+-4) EV would be an important – and probably very easy to implement! – feature. It is really annoying a 2500,- cam doesn’t support such a simple setting… Many have said that before… Nikon doesn’t listen…. poor customer dedication and unwise policy in the long run in my opinion…
I think I’m most excited about them fixing the random “long-write” bug: “In some rare cases, the memory card access lamp remained lit for longer than usual, and some time was required before any operations could be performed. This issue has been resolved.” I’ve had several shoots where my D800 would just get stuck like this for almost a minute before resuming normal operation!
Assign movie button WOOOHOOOO. Only thing what I missed in my D800 compared to D4 but it’s real now! ISO Button, HERE I come!
