‘2D or not 2D’? That is the question that creative Russian duo Alexander Khokhlov and Valeriya Kutsan pose to us in their new photographic series.
The images in this series are an exploration into 2D and 3D images. The very talented Kutsan has painted patterns, that would usually be associated with 2D artworks, on models’ faces and shoulders. Seeing the 2D associated patterns on the 3D face of a model is mind bending because your brain tries to decide between the two.
Inspired by colours and paintings, these photographs create a fascinating contrast between 2D and 3D. As a pop art fan, I was particularly mind blown by the Roy Lichtenstein-esque look of the model with the yellow hair.
Khokhlov and Kutsan began working together in 2010 and previously created a series called ‘Weird Beauty’ which is also well worth a look.
The dynamic duo have been kind enough to give us a sneak peak into their new series in a short video.
