How Moving The Light Can Dramatically Change Your Images

By Anthony Thurston on December 31st 2013

It has been said that lighting is the single most important piece of photography, and there are few examples as blatant as the one I am about to share with you.

The video below was shot with a single light, moved around the subject to create really cool optical illusion. When you watch the video, you will see it looks as if the woman’s face is changing, or that there are different faces. The fact is though, that the only change is the position of the light.

Isn’t that nuts? I mean, we all hear about how light dramatically affects an image and we all practice it everyday. It is one thing to know something, to see it in live action like this, is another. This woman goes from looking young, to old and even like a different person at times.

Take this as an example of why you should take some time to think about your lighting, because where you place your light really does make a dramatic difference on how your subject will look.

This would be extremely cool if it wasnt a ripoff of Clouzot-

That was so cool. How was the light moved around. By Hand? A Motorized contraption?
