After her uncle joked with her mother, asking if she was wearing her daughter’s clothes, Graphic Designer Carra Sykes set out to create an ongoing series that celebrates just how much she and her mother are alike. Women are usually teased that ‘they are becoming their mother’. Instead of taking it as a insult, Sykes began the project ‘Mother + Daughter’ which relishes the quirky personality that she has gained by swapping clothes. And it only seems fair, after all, when girls are younger, they usually sneak into their mother’s closet at least once to try on heels, pearls, and their mother’s ‘big girl’ stuff.
The project has become a type of personal study of Sykes and her mother’s relationship and physical traits. The simplicity of the series concept allows for it to grow, just as the relationship continues to blossom through time.
Oh yes, and it proves that we are our mothers after all. And just maybe, that ain’t too bad.
