About 10 years ago, photographer Miyoko Ihara started photographing her grandmother Misao. One day Ihara’s grandmother found a stray kitten with 2 different colored eyes in the shed. Misao named the kitten Fukumaru hoping that “the god of fuku (good fortune) would come and everything will be smoothed over like maru (circle).” The Grandma and the cat have been inseparable ever since.
One of my favorite things about photography is the ability to document everyday things. One picture of Misao and Fukumaru would be adorable, but a set of photos tells a story of their relationship and how close the grandma and cat are. Miyoko Ihara has a photo book of her Grandma and Cat, and it would make the perfect coffee table book, or a great gift for someone who loves cats and heartwarming stories. Check out her book here.
