Man’s Attempt to Break World Record Goes Terribly Wrong

By Hanssie on June 21st 2014

When I watch a GoPro video, I usually end up being thankful that I am sitting on my couch being a spectator. I’m a wimp though, so extreme anything, be it sports, activities, or even Doritos, is a huge deterrent for me. I ignore ‘Don’t Try This At Home‘ warnings simply because, well, it would never cross my mind to want to even attempt trying whatever life shortening activity is being warned against. I don’t even ride roller coasters… at Disneyland. That being said, the following video is probably one of the most suspenseful, terrifying, cringe-worthy, intensely dramatic, {insert your own adjective here}, minute and a half I’ve ever seen. And I think many of you will agree.

Guerlain Chicherit, a professional skier and rally driver, attempts to break the world record for the longest ramp car jump…and (spoiler alert) he fails. In an effort to get his name in the history books, Chicherit tried to jump 360 feet, to beat the current record of 332ft. Chicherit says,

When I woke up the morning of jump day, I called my wife and told her that I had a bad feeling.

(Um, that would be called intuition which is useful for warning you away from pain, bodily harm and death…)

Multiple HERO3+ GoPro cameras were mounted to capture every dramatic angle – inside and outside the vehicle – and the addition of slow motion during some parts of the footage help make this video more intense, as does the look on Chicherit’s face at around the 8:00min mark when he realizes that this may not end well for him. I found myself holding my breath even though I knew the outcome – he survives, sustaining only minor injuries. The GoPro description describes how the video is more than a crash video, it is “a record of a man confronting his own mortality, and ultimately experiencing a moment of what we can only describe as grace.”

Graceful indeed, because if I ever found myself staring death in the face like that, there would be screaming, tears, prayers and no shortage of expletives.

The video is 12 minutes long and worth every minute. If you want to skip straight toward the final jump, it starts at around 7:08.

Not in this lifetime or 30 consecutive lifetimes would I ever try such a stunt! I have to say though, he is either totally Nuts or has nothing but fool hardy Courage running through veins of ice water!

Those little GoPro Cameras took a tough beating but did an amazing job!

Crazy. Takes a lot of guts to even try this. Amazing what people can achieve and now what go pros can capture.

Crazy frenchman ! I know that life is about pushing your limits and discover what you can or cannot do but why didn’t he listened to his instinct. On a photographic point of view, this is great footage. Gopro is such a great gear. It puts you inside the car and allows you to “feel” what that crazy man is going through. I was really tensed watching this !

It seems weird but I think showing this kind of footage is a good thing. It shows that there really are dangers to these kind of stunts and record breaking events that these people are attempting. It sent chills up my back when it hit slow motion on his facial reaction and the car because I knew something bad was going to happen. Hopefully kids see this and realize that these events can have mishaps and cause death before trying to do something stupid themselves.

Thanks to the team that built this car….He survived only for this reason. Either way I am thankful he can kiss his wife & child every night!

I can’t believe he walked away from that. Glad the driver is safe, and glad they released this to show what can potentially go wrong, even with a professionally coordinated stunt like this. From a business perspective, smart of GoPro to release the footage to show how much of a beating these cameras can take.

From the title I was wondering why Go Pro would show this , thankfully he was not hurt, still kinda interesting to see what goes on inside a vehicle during a crash but I would rather see that with some crash dummies.

Yes, incredible he had no major injuries after this crash.
I had seen the footage before but not with all the onboard gopro cameras, very impressive.
