Man Flies Drone Through Fireworks Show for a Dazzling Video

By Hanssie on July 5th 2014

4th of July – it’s all about BBQs, hanging out with family and friends, eating and drinking (for which I am still recovering from today) and of course, watching the fireworks show. Jos Stiglingh created this dazzling view of a fireworks show in West Palm Beach using his DJI Phantom 2 and filming it with a GoPro Hero 3. The 4 minute video gives a unique and incredible perspective directly in and around the fireworks giving you a view like you’ve never seen before. Coupled with the crescendoing music set to Andrea Bocelli’s “Con Te Partiro, the dramatic footage, uploaded back in May, has since gone viral with over 3.2 million views and GoPro also condensed it and released the clip on their YouTube page.

The video is no doubt stunning, but as you can imagine, some people are not happy with Stiglingh’s irresponsibility. It is to be noted that flying a drone into exploding pyrotechnics around a large crowd of people is very dangerous and illegal. During fireworks displays airspace around the show is usually designated as no-fly zones and violating that could come with some hefty fines and possible jail time. So, this goes without saying, but don’t try this at home. Though I wonder how many people yesterday already did.

As much as I’m not a big fan of drone videos, but this one is amazing :) I love it.

What I really love about this idea is how this really gives you an idea of depth to the fireworks.

Usually, when you look at them in the sky, they seem two dimensional since they are so far away.
This is stunning, beautiful, and honestly magical.

    Amazing work!

I’d rather just watch the fireworks at Disneyworld than risk it taking a hit lol

Very creative and gutsy idea, and it paid off in spades. We who are jealous we don’t have a quadcopter, salute you!

I wonder if they will fine him for flying the drone through that.

I watched this and secretly wanted the camera to get hit and tailspin to its grave…

Hmmm, could lead to entirely new quadcopter technology: Quad to Ground Control, “We’ve been hit! … engine on fire! … Mayday, Mayday … we’re going in! … aaaarrrrrrggggggghhhhh!!!” The operator then flips open a special latch and pushes a special little red button. The GoPro then detaches and deploys a flame-retardant parachute. :)

Love Jeff Cable’s work – this is really wonderful. I don’t know if I have the stones to fly a DJII thru all those explosions.
