Lyn Slater – the Accidental Icon

By Brittany Smith on May 17th 2017

So many of us put an insane amount of pressure to become successful by the ripe old age of thirty. This seems to be a very unrealistic and stressful situation to place ourselves in. Stan Lee created his first hit comic, The Fantastic Four, just before turning 39. Vera Wang entered the fashion world at the age of 40. Colonel Sanders was 52 when he first franchised KFC.

The beautiful thing about life is that it can be rather serendipitous at times and can change everything we have come to know as fact in a moment’s notice. Lyn Slater, better known as the Accidental Icon is a testament to this. She shows us that age is a limiting factor that we place on ourselves when in the grand scheme of things, it is an irrelevant excuse we use to hold ourselves back. Age should be a non-issue.

For the better part of her life, 63 year old Lyn Slater has been a professor and academic at Fordham University. That is until she was going to meet a friend at the Lincoln Center for lunch during fashion week and was mistaken by members of the foreign press as a fashion icon. Seeing Lyn’s perfectly coiffed hair and chic style sense, it was an easy mistake to make. It attracted a rather large crowd and became a pivotal moment that changed her life.

Lyn is currently signed by Elite London and has worked with major fashion brands such as Mango and Uniqlo. In addition, she has a fashion blog which is appropriately titled “Accidental Icon” and she continues to be a social media influencer with an Instagram following just shy of 200,000 and it is growing every day. Lyn’s story is empowering men and women everywhere and proves that age really is just a number. Her journey has in fact led her to be that of an icon.

“We go into the geography with a very open mind; that something very serendipitous will present as we’re walking through New York City. You never know what you may find when you turn the corner.”
