Leica’s New ‘Rugged’ X-U Camera Announced

I remember seeing a rumor about this a while back, and it looks like it was legit. Leica has officially announced their new rugged X-U camera, aimed at people who want to spend three grand on a camera to beat the crap out of.

It certainly is not the prettiest camera that Leica has ever produced, but it does pack some interesting features inside:

  • 16.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens
  • 35mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Water, Dust, and Shockproof Construction
  • 3.0″ 920k-Dot LCD Monitor
  • Full HD 1080p Video Recording at 30 fps
  • Anti-Slip Rubber Exterior
  • Built-In Flash, Manual Focus Ring
  • Dedicated Underwater Shooting Mode

According to Leica’s press release, the new XU (typ 113) is rated for depths up to 49′ for up to 1 hour, also known as IP68. It also features a ‘shock-resistant’ design capable of withstanding a 4-foot drop onto 2-inch thick wood surface.

The new Leica X-U (typ 113) is now available for preorder over on B&H for a cool $2950.

Sony’s RX1R II To Resume Shipping February 19th

It was an interesting news a while back when it was announced abruptly that Sony was suspending shipping and production on the freshly announced RX1R II. We still, to this day, don’t know the cause for the stop in shipping and production, but we do have an update for those of you who are waiting on one.

Sony has announced that they have resumed production (or will be) and that shipping for the new RX1R II will begin on February 19th. So, if you were holding out on a pre-order, you can now place one knowing that the camera is still coming down the pipe.

Also, here is a quick refresher on the RX1R II’s impressive specs:

  • 42MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor
  • BIONZ X Image Processor
  • Variable Optical Low-Pass Filter
  • Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 Lens
  • Full HD 1080p60 Video & XAVC S Format
  • 399 Phase-Detect AF Points & 5 fps Burst
  • 0.39″ 2.36M-Dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF
  • 3.0″ 1,228.8k-Dot Tilting LCD Monitor
  • ISO 102400 & Uncompressed 14-Bit RAW
  • Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC

On another, related note, the original RX1R is currently on sale over on B&H for $1895 and it is still a killer camera.

First Nikon, Now Olympus To Enter Stagnant Action Cam Market?

The latest rumor buzz out of the Olympus camp does not have anything to do with full frame sensors or their rumored PEN-F camera body. No, it has to do with an action camera.

That’s right, despite the now very public issues facing GoPro and a stagnant action cam market, it seems that Olympus is now looking to get in on the action cam game.

We don’t have any image leaks or specs at this time, but the supposed announcement is coming up on January 27th. The rumor also stipulates that this new action camera would be compatible with all standard GoPro accessories.

I am not really into action cameras, but I am curious to see what Olympus comes up with here. Nikon’s interesting approach with their 360-degree action camera was unique; I am interested to see if Olympus takes a similarly unique approach or just comes in with a standard action cam.

Time will tell.

I think there is a market for a higher quality action/video camera. 1 inch sensor, a fixed wide angle lens (20-24mm non fisheye sort of thing). 4K 100mps and raw photos. Sell I with a waterproof housing and this would make GoPro look like a toy very quickly. I am surprised Panasonic hasn’t sold something like this, pack the lx100 with a fixed lens into a smaller form factor and boom. Thoughts?

    Who’d have thunk it?

Two different cameras have that A7R II sensor in it, and the Nikon D820 / D900 / DWhatever isn’t one of them. What the hell is taking them so long?

I am seriously wondering if all is not well with that relationship. Did we ever get confirmation on if the D5/D500 sensors were Sony made?

      D5 = Nikon made
      D500 = I don’t know

Yeah, that is significant in my opinion.

D5, D4s, D4 were all made by Nikon, so that’s not nearly as telling w.r.t. Sony relations.

A quick Google does not indicate who makes that D500 — most Nikon folks don’t seem to care given the drool-worthy specs. But seriously, that sensor can’t possibly suck with the ISO levels they are allowing on that rig. (I’m not expecting a 7 stop improvement, ha, but I firmly expect it to be APS-C best in class once tested.)
