Third-party lens manufacturers and consumers have entered into an unstated economic compact which stipulates that superior optical performance can be obtained sans the exorbitant price. However, it is not enough for lens makers to merely be good and affordable, they must carve out their own niche and plant the seeds that will one day blossom into the mystique found in more venerable brands. Laowa’s ability to promote eye-catching phrases such as “world’s first” or “zero distortion” lends itself to that hope. But, that hope will be soon be tested as their latest lens, the Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D is now available for pre-order.
Per the Laowa website:
This lens is currently the fastest in its class offering a superb optical quality for Full Frame Sony E mount cameras. It features a close-to-zero distortion with a 110° angle of view. The ultra-fast aperture f/2 enables photographers to capture impressive astro shots very easily.
This is currently only for Sony full frame cameras, however, at 15mm the 1.5 times crop resulting in a 22.5mm equivalent field of view on Sony APS-C bodies is still more than sufficient to be considered wide. Coming in at $849, landscape, astrophotography and video, real estate photographers and videographers all have something to look forward to in this latest release. It also features a clickless aperture option which budget filmmakers should find appealing.
