Instagram Doodler Takes Mirror Selfies To a Whole New Very Creative Level

By Hanssie on July 12th 2014

Mirror, mirror on the wall, please stop the duck-faced mirror selfies trend…

Unless they look like Helene Meldahl’s selfies. No duck face, but perhaps a drawing of a duck…then by all means, selfie away. Helene has always been a doodler and began leaving little messages and drawings with lipstick on the bathroom mirror for her roommate. One day she took a selfie with her artwork, posted it online and it was awesome. Now her Instagram account, Mirrorsme, has almost 40k followers and she has recently been featured on

Her drawings take about 20-30 minutes each and she uses chalk markers, posca markers, and acrylic markers to create her imaginative doodles. “Some people write in a diary, and some people play tennis. I draw on mirrors,” she says. “I’m not really one for details. I usually just get a picture in my head and go from there…”

Helene is finishing up her internship at the Norwegian Embassy in Washington DC and is ready for new adventures. The recent attention from her mirror drawings have garnered some job offers and she not only enjoys makes her pictures, but reading the “sweet, funny comments and reactions to the drawings.”

Fun idea and a great way to build a solid following by doing something different. Her drawings aren’t great but I think that’s what makes her project great also.

Am I alone in thinking this bizarre? Just shaking my head at the very concept of “selfie” – that this word has become what it has – and how highly narcissistic our culture has become. Point the camera the other direction, it’s not all about you.
