Image Tests From Sigma 50mm F/1.4 Leak Online, Compared To Sony, Nikon, & Zeiss

By Anthony Thurston on February 28th 2014

The new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is probably one of the most interesting releases by a third party manufacturer in quite a while. I say this because of instead of gunning to match or beat Canon or Nikon, Sigma has said publicly that Zeiss is their target on this one.

If the following image test leaks are legit, then it would seem as though Sigma has not only lived up to that promise, but may in fact have surpassed even the Zeiss lens. According to Photo rumors, Xitek – a Chinese company – has released an image quality test between the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4, Nikkor 58mm F/1.4G, Sony Planar T* 50mm f/1.4, and the Zeiss Otus 55mm F/1.4.

Based on what I have seen above – which, again, may or may not be legit – I would say that not only has Sigma produced a lens capable of challenging the Zeiss, they have created a lens that matches the Zeiss. Also, just as promised, the Sigma lens blows the Nikkor lens out of the water in both center and edge sharpness. Wow.

I am waiting for more tests, if this Sigma Art 50mm, will be better than my Nikon 50mm 1.4G, then bye bye Nikon and hello Sigma :)

I had the previous Sigma 50 1.4 – for about 3 days. After getting rid of a canon nifty 50 for the Sigma, I was seriously disappointed. Straight to gumtree for that one. But the 35 1.4 art series is just so good. I love it. What a difference.
Like others, I am very curious about the an art series 85 1.4. If that is a genuine competitor to the canon 85 1.2, I’m in!

I did the same thing, switch out the Canon 50mm F/1.8 for the Sigma 50mm F/1.4, but unlike you I actually like the Sigma. What about yours did you not like? Did you get a bad copy?

I had nyn sigma 50mm f/1.4 for two hours before realising it had back focus. After microadjusting I must admit it is my best lens ever.

I think the price will be $900. It looks like its worth it. I want to buy the nikkor 85mm 1.4 but ill waith for the sigma first

Rumored price is closer to $1300, but right around that $1000 mark would make this lens still “affordable” and a much better deal than the Zeiss. Really curious to see where it ends up.

Love the 35mm 1.4. If this is as well constructed and hopefully (if they’ve read the only criticism I’ve seen) they’ve added a weather seal to the 50mm I’d have no problem paying for it. It’s too bad it’s not as marked down as the 35mm when compared to first party.
