How to Install Lightroom Presets

By Pye Jirsa on July 23rd 2013

UPDATE | 4.10.2018 – Installing Lightroom Presets on Adobe Lightroom CC 7.3 or newer

PLEASE NOTE: This process may only install Local Brush Presets for Adobe Camera Raw (Adobe Bridge) and they may not appear in Lightroom 7.3 or newer. Refer to the Lightroom CC 7.2 Installation Guide (below) to install Local Adjustment Presets and Export Presets ONLY. (Do not install the .lrtemplate Develop Presets, if you have already upgraded to Lightroom CC 7.3 or newer!)

Step 1: Find Lightroom’s Preset Folder

Installing Lightroom Presets is as simple as copying the new presets into Lightroom’s Preset folder. Whether you are on a Mac or PC, finding the preset folder is simple:

a. Open Lightroom

b. Right-click on an existing preset, and click “Show in Finder” on a Mac or “Show in Explorer” on a PC.

You should see your file system display the CameraRaw Presets folder on your computer. If you have existing presets installed, go to Step 2 to back up those presets, otherwise go directly to Step 3.

Step 2: Backup Your Existing Lightroom Presets

Before you install new presets, we always recommend backing up your existing presets. If you don’t have existing presets, then skip to step 3.

a. Double-click “CameraRaw” to enter “CameraRaw” presets folder, if it is not already open.

b. Copy or drag and drop the following 2 folders to your Desktop (or other location of your choosing) for backup:

LocalCorrections

Settings

Upgrade Note: If you already have a previous version of the Lightroom Preset System, or the Camera Raw (Adobe Bridge) Preset System, installing a new version will create duplicate presets. After backing up your presets, delete these 2 folders prior to installing the new Lightroom Preset System.

Step 3: Copy in the New Lightroom Presets

Once your existing presets are backed up, simply install the Lightroom Preset System (or new presets) by dragging and dropping the folders from your download, into the folder on your computer as shown below:

a. Copy or drag and drop your downloaded presets into the CameraRaw Folder that we opened in Step 1.

MAC USERS: You will be prompted to “replace” existing folders which will ERASE all presets within the Settings and LocalCorrections Preset folders. If you have existing presets you wish to keep, prior to installing, please be sure to backup your existing presets as shown in Step 2.

b. Once the presets have been copied into the CameraRaw folder on your computer, simply close and then re-open Lightroom and the presets should appear! Viola!

What do we do if we just upgraded to Lightroom Classic 7.5?  I don’t use Adobe Camera Raw (only Lightroom), so how do I get the develop presets to work in Lightroom?
