GPP 2013 Shoot Out: Arias vs Adler vs Keatly

By Anthony Thurston on March 19th 2013

Gulf Photo Plus is a photography convention that takes place in Dubai each year.  The convention brings in some of the world’s top photographers to teach workshops and seminars. They also have this awesome tradition of having a shootout between some of their instructors. This year they pit Lindsay Adler, John Keatley, and Zack Arias against each other.

Their subject was world renowned portrait photographer Gregory Heisler, one of the defining photographers of our generation. Each subject had 20 minutes to shoot and edit a photo of Gregory, the winner was decided by the crowd noise at the end of the shootout.

Here is the video…

My Thoughts

All three contestants did wonderfully on this, its not an easy thing to shoot a portrait of such a world renowned photographer in front of huge audience of other photographers. Of the three Zack Arias was certainly the best showman, his harlem shake entrance through his Peter Hurley jokes and on to his final shot was hilarious. But if judging the images only, I would have to say that I liked Lindsay Adler’s the best. Hers didn’t have the best expression  but I liked the final result overall a hair better than the other two.

I disagree. I don’t really have a problem with compositing and all that, but I don’t think a composite was the way to go for this shoot; it’s kind of cheating. I do like John Keatly’s photo, but I think Zack Arias really stole the show.

Zarias totally killed it. That was pretty ballsy.
