Panasonic Announces $99 GH4 Vlog Update

The day has finally come, and Panasonic has officially announced their Vlog update for the GH4, but there is a catch. If you want to take advantage of this new update, you will need to fork over $99 in order to download it.

Let me start by saying that I can see both sides to this argument. First, Panasonic spent a lot of time and money developing this update and getting vlog to work correctly on the GH4, $99 is not even one tenth of what a GH4 costs. In my mind, it is cheap enough that those who want/need it can get it while still allowing Panasonic to recoup some fo those development costs.

That said, from the videographer perspective, I can totally understand being annoyed that I have to fork over another $99 in order to get this functionality. Regardless, the terms are set, and if you want to get your hands on this vlog update when it becomes available in mid-September, you can get all the details from the Panasonic store page here.

Panasonic Also Announces New 25mm F/1.7 Lens

In addition to the above announced GH4 Vlog Update, Panasonic took the opportunity to announce a new 25mm F/1.7 lens for the M 4/3 system. The lens will create a 50mm field of view equivalent to a 35mm or Full Frame camera, and will let in a ton of light thanks to that fast F/1.7 aperture.

Optical Arrangement

  • 8 elements in 7 groups
  • 1 Ultra-High Refractive Index (UHR) lens with uniform description from the center to the edges
  • 2 Aspherical Lenses providing effective prevention of lens aberration (spherical aberration and distortion)

This new lens will retail for $299 in the US, with an expected ship date sometime in October. If you are interested in being one of the first to get this lens, Panasonic is running a killer deal and you can pre-order this lens now over directly from Panasonic for just $249! If you are interested, you can get the details here. The lens is not currently available for pre-order from web retailers like B&H, but once it is, we will update you.

No More Batis Lenses From Zeiss in 2015

According to a rumor report over on Sony Alpha Rumors, Zeiss does not have any more plans to announce any Batis lenses before the end of this year. The only FE mount lens they do plan to announce will be a Loxia branded lens that is set to be on display at Photo Plus in NYC at the end of October.

As much as I would love to see some new Batis lenses announced, Zeiss is having a hard enough time as it is getting the current 25mm and 85mm to interested photographers. I can only image how much worse it could get if they added another one to the mix without first addressing the supply issues with the currently available models.

As for another Loxia lens, that is great news, too. I am currently playing with the 50mm Loxia, and I love it. As much as I love to rely on AF to do the dirty work for me on many occasions, there is something to be said about a beautifully crafted manual focus only lens. I look forward to seeing what this new Zeiss Loxia announcement will be.
