Genaray SpectroLED Three Light Kit Review

By Pye Jirsa on May 28th 2014

Your First 3 Light Kit

When we first start learning photography we realize how crucial lighting is, so when it’s time to invest in lighting we want something great but affordable. The Genaray SpectroLED-14 Three Light Kit may be a continuous lighting solution for both novice and experienced photographers and videographers who want affordable lights to add production quality to their work.

The Scene

We’re shooting a new workshop called “Photography 101” which goes through all the basics of photography. In this scene my lovely co-host Michelle and I are sitting and talking through various photography subjects. Our director of photography used the Genaray Three Light Interview Kit to light us up, and we were very happy with the footage.

Performance: 4 out of 5 Stars

The Genaray SpectroLED-14 Three Light Kit performs well, although one of the lights had a flicker problem whenever we tried to turn up the output to 75% and above. BHPhotovideo swapped it out for us no problem (which they do with all their products) and that issue was resolved. But if we needed to shoot right out of the box and this happened then it have been a problem.

Features: 4 out of 5 stars

These Genaray SpectroLED-14 Three Light Kit have many features that make it more functional than your standard LED light. Included with the lights are remote dimmers, which come in handy when you want to raise the LED and can’t reach the dimmer dial on the back of the light.

There’s also an umbrella hole built into the light which is fantastic because umbrellas are more portable and faster to set up than alternative diffusers. Although you should note the umbrella hole is quite narrow and didn’t fit my Westcott Umbrella, but it did fit my fotodiox. Also you have to take off the diffusing sock to attach the umbrella so you don’t get 2 levels of diffusion.

Design: 5 out of 5 stars

My first impression of the lights when I was taking them out of the box was that they were designed and constructed well. They have a handle on top which makes carrying and moving the lights into position easy and the power cable for the lights are also threaded so you don’t have to worry about the power accidentally being disconnected.

The output dial and remote on the light clicks into place and there’s an umbrella socket built into the mount which makes adding diffusion quick and easy. The construction of the dish is metal and everything for the most part feels very solid.

Quality 4 out of 5 stars

There are a few places where quality falls short, and one of those is with the remote dimmer. It’s surprisingly light and feels hollow, and without a doubt would break if it were to be stepped on. Another place where quality is lacking is the boom arm, it’s very light and it bends easily. If you’re going to mount the smaller Spectre LED I would highly suggest invest in a more stable boom arm. The socks are also very light in fabric and with 2 hands it’s difficult to get them over the light.

Value: 5 out of 5 stars

The price of the Genaray SpectroLED Three Light Kit is about $1200, but right now BHPhotovideo has an instant savings of about $450, making this three light kit about $750. That’s an amazing value for the performance and quality you get from these lights. We’re very happy with these lights, and I use them daily in my recording space.

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

With a 3 being very mediocre and 5 being highly exceeds our expectations, we gave the Genaray SpectroLED Three Light Kit a 4.5 out of 5 stars. Although there are a few shortcomings, the Genaray SpectroLED lights are a great value that offer exceptional quality and production value to both photos and videos. If you’re looking for a 3 light continuous lighting kit then you should definitely consider the Genaray SpectroLED Three Light Kit.

Would have been good to note what ISO/fstop was used so we can get an idea of how bright these dim looking LED lights are ;-)
