Friday Funny: “Pizza in the Wild” – Because Pizza is Art and I’m Hungry

By Hanssie on April 4th 2014

Pizza is one of those magical foods. Eat it hot. Eat it cold. It can be stale and still be delicious. This may be the first time I’ve ever seen pizza at the center of a photo series though, and my only question is, “Why hasn’t someone thought of doing that before? It’s brilliant!”

Warning: Reading this post might make you hungry.

JonPaul Douglass is a commercial photographer based in Los Angeles. One day, he was inspired by a grafitti covered wall, that had a picture of a pizza tagged on it. As with most people who sees something that amuses them these days, he snapped a picture of it with his phone and put it on Instagram. And that was when he was inspired by the idea of using real pizzas throughout the city and photograph them with his iPhone 4s.

Partially inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their love for pizza, he at first tried to find one that looked like the cartoon pizza from the show. Settling upon the Little Ceasar’s $5 pizza (good choice) as it looks close to what he wanted aesthetically, he began his project in and around his city. And #pizzainthewild was born.

[REWIND: This isn’t the first Friday Funny with pizza as the topic. I guess my mind is subliminally trying to tell me something.  FRIDAY FUNNY: MODEL GETS UN-PHOTOSHOPPED IN TIME-LAPSE VIDEO]

Only 20 pizzas were harmed in the making of this project. Usually, Jonpaul purchases two pizzas and runs around town photographing them. A few times they get stuck in the fridge for a few days, hence why a few photos the pizza looks a little worse for wear. A time or two, the pizza gets eaten anyhow, because, it’s tough to ride around with a freshly baked pizza and not be tempted.” Completely understandable…
