Joel-Grimes-Beauty-Lighting-Splash Tips & Tricks

[Framed] Joel Grimes on Overhead Beauty Lighting

By fotosiamo on May 25th 2012

Continuing the weekly [Framed] lighting show, this week Joel Grimes took out his beauty dish for a spin to demonstrate how to do a beauty lighting (sometimes referred to clam-shell lighting if using another light in place of a white bounce card/reflector). I like doing this technique and I try to change it up by using no sock, gridded BD, or sock+gridded BD, as well as shoot it on-axis and slightly off-axis. Also play around with the height of the beauty dish, the distance from the model, and how you want to use or not use a fill bounce.

Here is a quick example of my beauty lighting:

By the way, anyone have a Mola beauty dish? Isn’t in it amazing? So creamy! Here’s my shot with that Mola Euro with a sock: | Olivia Jordan

How about you? What are some of your examples of beauty lighting?
