In 2009, Rafael Del Col and Tatiane Valques took some studio portraits one week before their wedding. Four years later, Tatiane was tragically killed in a car accident leaving their young baby daughter, Raisinha, without a mother and Rafael a widower. Tatiane was also pregnant at the time, and the unborn baby was also lost.
Late last year, exactly one year after the tragedy, Rafael wanted to pay tribute and honor his late wife. Rafael was inspired by Ben Nunery, whose images went viral a few years ago. Rafael read about Nunery who had lost his wife to a rare form of cancer and to honor her, he and his daughter recreated his wedding photos. Rafael wanted to do something similar.
Photographed by Raiz Fofografia in Brazil, Rafael and Raisinha recreated 16 photographs from the original photo shoot. Little 3-year-old Raisinha can be seen wearing her mother’s jewelry and shoes in some of the photos. The family dog, Raul, a gift from Rafael to Tatiane when they first started dating, also makes an appearance in both sets of photos.
Rafael created a behind the scenes video on YouTube that shows scenes from the photo shoot and the final images, some of which are shown in this article. Using Raisinha’s second favorite song as the background music, the video, which recently went viral with 2.5 million views, will bring a tear to your eye. You can see it below.
Shortly after his wife’s death, Rafael searched the Internet for solace, seeking help on widowhood and raising a daughter as a single parent. He found nothing, so he began a blog to help others in similar situations. It’s in Porteguese, but you can see it here.
