I always loved launching bottle rockets as a kid, pretending that I was sending imaginary astronauts into space and all that jazz. But what one french father did for his kids takes this childhood pastime to new levels of awesome, bordering on epic if I do say so myself.
Nicholas (Dad) one day received a request from his three children to launch their favorite toys, Bad Piggy from Angry Birds and Hello Kitty, into space. He agreed to the request and spent the next several weeks researching what sort of tools he would need to achieve such a unique feat.
Driven by the need to not break his promise to his children Nicholas designed a rig to launch his children’s toys into space. In the end his rig consisted of a Weather Balloon he bought from the US, a GPS tracker from Hong Kong, an Iphone, a Battery, and two GoPro cameras to capture the trip.
On a nice sunny day, the moment of truth came, Nicholas did not know if his rig would work but it was time to put it to the test…..
As you can see, the rig worked. The Bad Piggy and Hello Kitty made it to 20,000m above sea level and came back in one piece. The only hiccup was that the GPS unit froze at such high altitude and so for a brief time the family lost contact with their space exploring toys.
In the end the family had to travel over 300km to be reunited with the toys. The trip was a success, and Nicholas officially took his place among the ranks of the coolest dads on earth.
What awesome project have you done for your kids (or your parents for you)? Anything quite as awesome as this? Share your story or thoughts on this in a comment below.
