Dog Photography: Dog That Goes on Epic Adventures When He’s Asleep

By Hanssie on February 13th 2015

Ruf_adventureOh to be a dog; They play, they eat, they go on walks, they chase their tails and they nap. That’s about it in a nutshell. Dogs can nap up to 18 hours a day! In fact, as I sit and write this, my dog is snoozing away, snoring and dreaming about treats and chasing squirrels no doubt.

Actress and dog photographer Sara Rehnmark has a 3 year old Pharaoh Hound named Rufus. Rufus is a goofy pup who likes “spaz outs, playing at the beach and sleeping.”   Aside from the impressive talent of being able to put his own cone of shame on, he can smile on command. Every day when Rufus naps he goes on some epic adventures, thanks to Sara. Using household items and some imagination, Sara creates some cute and funny scenes.

Thus far, Rufus has built a snowman, played football, goes grocery shopping, parties hard, plays dress up and much more. It all began when Sara took a photo of Rufus dressed like a reindeer for her father for a funny birthday card tradition, “My family is Swedish, so it’s a nod to northern Sweden (the land of reindeer, woods, rabbits, etc.)” Sara tells BarkPost.

It takes her about 2 hours total for the shoot, and Rufus doesn’t always sleep through the whole thing, “I set up while he is sleeping and when he wakes up he usually looks at me and puts his head right back down,” says Rehnmark. “The other ones he doesn’t just play along, he comes over to the set up and lays down while I am trying to set up. He will let me mold him like putty if he knows a treat is in it for him!

Sara and her husband, Brian are working on writing a children’s book based on Rufus’ adventures and he will be starring in his very own calendar. All in a day’s work for Rufus the sleeping dog. You can keep up with Rufus’ adventures on his Raising the Ruf website or fans can follow Sara and Rufus on Facebook and Twitter.

Or you can train them to do most stuff. Our daughter used to put her pet bird on the dog for photographs. They didn’t seem to mind at all.

don’t know about you guys, but I’ll do this experiment with my cat… or at least I’ll try, as he’s a light sleeper

We have a whippet that might just sleep soundly enough for us to do this. The Kelpie/doberman mix on the other hand….not a chance!

In any case, I love this idea, and the shots are great. Well done Sara!

I wish my dogs would sleep deeply enough to do something like that. If they fall asleep in funny positions, it is sooooo hard to be able to sneak up with the camera…

My wife and I have had Beagles since 1980 and it has been interesting to watch them when they fall into a dream state. They’ll start moving their paws as if they’re running; their whiskers will move as if they’re picking up scent. Occasionally, they’ll make sounds as if they are on the trail.

I love it when my dogs talk in their sleep. It’s so funny. Or when they snore like a human.

my dog once fell into a deep sleep and my daughter thought it would be hilarious if she posed the dog in funny ways and took photos of him. then we realized the dog had actually passed away so now when we look back at some of the photos we took we’re both horrified and amused.

Omg. You’re right, there are no other words for that than horrifying and amusing…
