DJI Phantom Drone Used to Capture Video of Active Volcano

By Anthony Thurston on March 25th 2014

We have seen some pretty cool videos over the last couple of years thanks to the DJI Phantom and it’s easy pairing with the GoPro cameras. Today, another such video crossed my desk and I have to say that, while it may not be the most exciting footage ever, I was very impressed with it.

Shaun O’Callaghan, a Youtube user, posted the following footage captured in the mouth of the “Yasur Volcano on Tanna Island, Vanuatu.” The description goes on to say “Amazingly, no Phantoms where harmed while filming!”

Footage like this really makes me want to take the plunge and get one of these amazing drones. There are not any active volcanoes where I live, but still, this just proves the sort of insane footage you can capture with these from a safe distance.

The current DJI Phantom, the DJI Phantom II, is currently available for $869 on B&H and that comes with the GoPro Gimbal. So, if you already have a GoPro, then you would be good to go for just under $900. Still a bit much for “hobby” uses, but if you have any way to make money using it and, for the time being, no longer off limits in the US – then it is a great investment.

I have seen some wedding video shoots that make great use of drones. It certainly adds another dimension.
